Anomie refers to the lack or ineffectiveness of normative regulation in society. The concept was first introduced in sociology by Emile Durkheim (1893) who argued, against Marx, that the division of labor brings about problematic consequences only under exceptional circumstances, either because of a lack of regulation or because the level of regulation does not match the degree of development Durkheim also argues that anomie is a pathology resulting from the transition between fully developed states of mechanical and organic solidarity (Void). Anomie occurs in the process of an evolution between two social species, and Durkheim indicates that it is harmful, rather than functional, for individual and social well-being. (Anomie was a concept Durkheim developed to describe a state where social and/or moral norms were confused, unclear, or simply not present. In short, normlessness).

The term was introduced by the French sociologist Emile Durkheim in his study of suicide. Durkheim identifies two major causes of anomie: the division of labor, and rapid social change. Both of these are, of course, associated with modernity.
Durkheim observed that social periods of disruption, such as economic depression lead to increased levels of anomie and higher rates of crime, suicide, and deviance. Durkheim believed that sudden change caused a state of anomie. The system breaks down, either during a great prosperity or a great depression, anomie is the same result (Durkheim).

Widowhood is a prime example of this type of anomie (Durkheim,1897). Chronic domestic anomie: referred to the way marriage as an institution regulated the sexual and behavioral means-needs balance among men and women. Durkheim further developed the theme of anomie in Le Suicide (Suicide) (1897), defining anomic suicide as that resulting from insufficient social regulation of individual aspirations. In this connection, he discussed economic anomie, caused by a period of economic expansion; and conjugal or sexual anomie, due to the introduction and spread of divorce.
